BCCA Report - June 1st 2008

BCCA Report

The most notable change that occurred at OII in the past year has been in the General Managers chair.

Incumbent Bob Miller took over the managerial duties in February from the semi retiring Hugh Fallis.

On February 27, OII hosted a going away dinner for Hugh and wife Marilyn at the Maverick Inn, Kamloops. This evening event was well attended by friends, brand inspectors, staff members and OII board members. Several of Hugh’s closer acquaintances took advantage of opportunity as the evening was filled with roasts and toasts. President Brian Hill served as master of ceremonies and spoke on behalf of the OII board of directors thanking Hugh for his many years of loyalty and dedication, wishing him and Marilyn the best of success and happiness in semi retirement.

In the Office

Jan Canart enters her fifth season as office manager, as she diligently reigns over all areas, from accounting to keeping our inspectors in check when submitting their activity reports.

Kelli Pozzobon (3 years) and Nicole Olynyk (1 year) job share on a weekly basis combining front desk duties and brand registries.

The office staff conduct themselves in a friendly professional manner with excellent telephone communication skills, as most anyone who has called the office would attest to.

Please feel free to call if there is anything we at OII can do to assist you regarding brands, brand renewals, brand inspections, missing livestock or movement of livestock.

If for any reason we are unable to answer your concerns, we will serve with due diligence and confidentiality in finding answers or procedure for you.

  • 2008 brand renewals have been sent out and are due June 30
  • New brand books are being printed and will be available in September 2008
  • OII will be printing new manifests this year that will include a “Financial Declaration” section. This is now mandated by LIS – Alberta and once available will be a requirement for cattle going to Alberta from BC
  • OII has introduced a “Season Permit” requirement for all stock contractors and livestock suppliers with reference to movement of rodeo stock in and out of brand inspection areas. This agreement is unique to the rodeo sector and is being introduced for the 2008 season on a probationary period in an attempt to move forward in satisfying the needs and interest of all parties

In the Field

OII currently employs 35 brand inspectors located throughout the prescribed areas of the Province.

All of our inspectors are considered part time and yet are readily available to conduct inspection duties at the beckon call of the industry.

In the fall of 2007, the brand inspectors listed below were recognized for 10 years of service with the company since the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Fisheries designated OII to administer the brand registration and inspection program in British Columbia.

Peace River Area: Al Hollingshead, Raoul Deprez
Central – Interior Area: Harold Kerr, Jon Ziler, Carol Imus, Reg Marek
